Where Do I Appear for a Shoplifting Charge in Bridgewater NJ?

All shoplifting charges will be governed by NJSA 2C:20-11b in New Jersey. Pursuant to the statute, a shoplifting charge can either be a second, third or fourth degree felony or a disorderly persons offense, which is New Jersey’s version of a misdemeanor. The dollar amount of the merchandise in question will dictate what degree of shoplifting a Defendant is charged with. It will also dictate where the shoplifting charges are litigated at as well. All disorderly persons offense shoplifting charges will be litigated in the Bridgwater Municipal Court, which is located at 100 Commons Way. Conversely, all felony level shoplifting charges will be transferred to the Somerset County Superior Court, which is located in Somerville. Now it is possible for a felony level shoplifting charge to be remanded back to the Bridgewater Municipal Court for disposition. If that is to occur then the felony level shoplifting charges will be downgraded to a disorderly persons offense.
